Co-Rookies of the Year : Jeff Mariner, Jay Gierhahn (tie)
Honorable Mention: John Best
Most-Improved Player: Dave Granville
Honorable Mention: Dan Gainer
Comeback Player of the Year:Tim Linnane
GM Of the Year: John Healy- second seed as a rookie GM and made the finally 4 after losing his first and second round draft picks. Inconsistent Bar attendance almost cost him this award.
Runner-UP: Ryan O’MALLEY- he had McCann as the number one pick over all and got a steal with Granville in the 4th but if you have McCann on your team and you don’t win then there is a problem. Nonetheless, finished as the number 1 seed and won the Championship in dominating fashion without Granville. Playing with a play-off rotation from Week I is probably the number factor in losing out to Healy.
MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER: Kevin McCann(3 years running)
Runner-UP: Jeff Mariner
Sportsmanship of the Year Award: Mark Manzke
Runner-up: Jay Gierhahn
A YEAR IN REVIEW
This concludes my 31st year in the league- I have probably seen 500 players come and go since I first joined. The games are always fun but as my time comes to end what I will remember most about the league is the players I have played with and against and the laughs and the ball-busting at the bar and the weekly texting behind the scenes discussing all things that impact the league on and off the court especially with Ryan O’Malley and John Healy. On behalf of Mike Greene and myself, I would like to thank all the guys who stepped up to be captains and set an example for the rest of the league with your bar attendance. Overall the bar attendance this year was pretty poor and I am not sure what the answer is especially when we no longer have the long waiting list any more to get into the league. Back in the day, it was much easier to make regular bar attendance as a condition to playing the league. Most disappointing was a lack of attendance at the Championship Game and at the bar afterwards but this was just probably a reflection of the poor attendance all year. Maybe a change of scenery will help but we are having a hard time reaching a consensus as to an alternative venue. I am all for a change and that will continue to be discussed in the off-season.
We had great parity in the league this year and that is what you shoot for in a bar/draft league but the talent continues to get better every year and I am sure we will add some more young talented players come next season. If anyone knows anyone, please get me their contact information so we can get them on the waiting list as soon as possible.
The on- court incidents were few and far between this year so we are moving in the right direction and the league would lie to thank you for that.
We are considering a few changes to try and improve the league next year such as breaking the season up into two halves, having a best out 2 of 3 Championship and giving the Number 1 seed to the best bar team. If anyone else has any ideas on how to improve the league, please feel free to contact Mike or I. A special thanks to all the players that have provided me with blog material though out the season and have taken my comments in the spirit that they are intended. I am done my best to inspire feedback on this website(we do have a section to post comments). League wide input with comments, trash-talking and ball-busting or witty observations will only add to your viewing pleasure. As I go into year 2 with the new website, I hope to be able to provide more blog material from outside media sources that will add to your reading pleasure. Thanks for reading. Orange will be back in a big way next year-stay tuned.
