In general a much better showing at the bar but we really should have double the amount that showed up last night and on a consistent basis. Those who stuck around late were treated to some unexpected entertainment. You had to be there to appreciate it. Let’s put it this way I was able to convince our “guests” that I was the father of John and Brian Healy. I think Spud made a phone call. He was in quite the jovial mood after scoring a career high but it comes with an asterisk and even offered to buy Buona beef sandwiches for the crowd. Side note: there were actually 3 referees in the house which out numbered some teams. Quote of the night: A 5-year member our our league unashamedly asking: “How does the kitty work?” I can’t make this stuff up. He just locked up his place on the all-Shame team and there is nothing he can do for the rest of the season to remove himself. I count at least 10 players who have yet to step foot into Dingers this year-names will be published at the appropriate time but not to have come in 5 years- that is some pretty select company this is even surpassing Whirity status This is almost as bad another player who has also not showed in 5 years but actually went over to Cork and Kerry one night rather than hang out with his teammates and the league players. A special thanks to Terry McGuffrage for finishing off the last Barraco’s pizza before the 9:00 group arrived. Seriously, thank you.
Bye- Team O’Malley
There was some really bad basketball played last night.
6:00 – McEldowney 47 over Hellacious 43- words can not describe how bad Team Healy played- a game which featured the first technical of the year which I presume was a desperate attempt to motivate the lackluster play of his team but instead wound up resulting in a 5 point swing which may have ultimately cost team Healy the game. Team Healy apparently got the memo about showing up at the bar but I think they showed up before the game because they certainly played like they were drunk. Actually that is an insult to all drunk guys every where-my apologies. At one point, White actually just threw the ball out of bounds to no one in particular as there was no white player in the vicinity. Looks like Fahey is the real deal(not the second best player in the league as some one called him but very good) and might be one of the few players in the league who can guard Dave Sexauer’s brother. He will definitely soften the blow of losing Knapczyk and keeps them a serious contender for the Championship. As bad as Team Healy played, they only lost by 4 and were playing without Slager so they can take some solace in the loss but they will have to play better more consistently before you can say “they’re back”.
7:00- Manzke 62 over Wagner 50- neither team at full strength so you cannot read much into this game but Team Manzke was badly in need of a win. The lone highlight for Team Wags as Manzke and Sexton put the clamps on Wags and Packy was that Troy lit it up in the second half with 5 3s. Surprisingly Team Wags actually led by 1 at half but worn down in the second half. Team Red was led on the offensive end by Manzke and Sexton as their team set multiple screens freeing them up for open shots. It appears that Team Wags has a spot in the play-in game all but locked up. Team Manzke if they can stay healthy and players show up could be the surprise team of the second half.
P.S. This game highlighted a re-occurring problem with guys not wearing the league issued shirts as one player on Red showed up in a Maroon shirt which was the same color as their opponent. So if you are not going to wear the league shirts at least try and keep in mind who your opponent is going to be. I have also seen this with the White and grey Teams. Next year we will try and make sure we don’t get two colors that are so similar.
8:00- Spadoni 75 over ___________ 52- not sure who that was but Team Harrigan failed to show up and the game was called for lack of interest with 4 minutes to go. Team Harrigan needs a collective team heart transplant after this one. Koll, Spadoni, Gollogly and Alkhosvky were all on fire if anyone can be on fire when no defense is being played. As Team Harrigan has showed they can play a little defense when they want to so maybe they just had one of those nights. They were missing Kevin Harrigan but still no excuse for how they played- they will have the bye week to stew over this one and try and gets things figured out.
9:00- Statham 74 over B. Healy 60- statement game for an under-manned Team Statham with a convincing win over a surging Team Healy who may have been somewhat distracted by one of their teammates wearing sweat pants for most of the game. The game did not start out well for Team Orange as they got off to their typical slow start missing their first 5 shots and getting down 8-0 to start the game. Once the shots started to fall they did not stop as Team Statham was led by their top 3 players who all scored in double-digits and K. Statham came up big with a rare double-digit rebounding effort on a night when it was really needed. Despite playing a very good defensive team, Team Orange put up at least 15 3s while keeping Team Healy to 5 3s. Kessenich was playing hurt and Team Healy was without Fitz so they were missing some scoring. B. Healy lead his team in scoring and rebounding with a strong double-double. The game was much closer than the final score as Team Orange made 8 straight FTS to close out the game and Team Orange got more contribution from their bench than Team Healy with Nichols and Garmes coming up big while the game was still on the line.
