Bye- Team Bernard

6:00- Manzke 70 over Wags 69*- despite having only 4 of their own players, Team Manzke somehow won this game after being down 17 in the second half. Team Mankze picked up Greeno as their 5th player but his participation in the game did not have much of an impact on the final outcome. Team Wags had no one to blame but themselves for this loss and any anger that was demonstrated after the game was misdirected.

*For all of you that do not know, there are no forfeits in the league. All games are played and count regardless if a team is short of players and has to pick up a league player or have someone from your team play with your opponent. This has been the league rule as long as the league has been existence and there are good reasons for the rule despite someone complaining afterwards: “just because it has always been that way, it does not make it right”. To his credit, Manzke offered to give the win to Team Wags after the game.

7:00- Mikuzis 57 over Statham 56- Despite their captain’s pre-game warning that this was a trap game, Team Statham got their asses kicked in every phase of the game and was sleep-walking through 3/4 quarters of the game. Team Mikuzis passed the ball, shot the ball and rebounded the ball better and played better defense. Team Statham did show some pride and fought back to tie the game with 21 seconds left after going down by 17 in the second half. After a dumb foul to put Team Mikuzis at the line with the game tied at 56, Team Mikusiz made only one FT to take a 1 point lead with 21 seconds left. Team Statham passed up several open looks and with the clock winding down was able to get a  wide-open lane to the basket and as three players converged Cosme his contested shot at the buzzer just fell short. Even if that shot had gone in, Team Mikuzis deserved to win the game. As a result of the way Team Mikuzis out-muscled Team Statham in this game, we have coined a new phrase to describe their style of play- it is called “BARRACO STRONG” McGuffrage is working on team bracelets. Dennis “6 Seconds” Sexton was the MVP of this game.

8:00-O’Malley-less 62 over Spadoni-less 56(OT)- (THE SHOT CLOCK GAME)Team Spadoni led most of the game as McCann did not show up until half-way through the first half but once McCann arrived the lead slowly disappeared. Unfortunately, Harrigan tweaked his achilles with about 10 minutes left in the second half and that ended Team Spadoni’s shot at the upset. With the scored tied and 1:40 left in the second half Team O’Malley decided to play for the last shot as McCann dribbled the ball for the entire time and then wound up taking a desperation shot as time expired that missed allowing the game to go to OT. If there was ever a reason to institute a shot clock this was game was the perfect example. We should have a gentlemen’s agreement that during the regular season there should be no running out of the clock but obviously this would be impossible to enforce. If the basketball gods would have had their way, Team Spadoni would have won this game in OT but unfortunately it did not work out that way. With O’Malley missing, DeCarlo stepped up big time and provided the spiritual leadership that Team O’Malley needed and played his best game of the year despite not scoring a single point and showed what he can do when he is not playing under O’Malley’s shadow. DeCarlo’s foolhardy but gutsy attempt to draw a charge on Neil barreling down the sideline would have made Sports Center’s top 10. Not only was he the MVP on the court but he was the MVP at bar and may have been asked to leave as he tried to secure his spot on the all-bar team.

I would love to receive comments as to how the rest of the league feels about this stalling strategy.

9:00- Team Healy 64 over Team Shimko 41(THIS IS NOT A MISPRINT), Despite only have 6 guys and then losing Derrick “ZION” Brown with in the first two minutes of the game, Team Healy completely took over the game in the second half after a fairly close first half with Team Shimko playing a very disinterested game and offered no resistance and the Healy boys and Badon imposed their will on them broke the game wide open. This was a really bad performance by Team Shimko and it will take several team showers to wash the stink off

DB’s injury appeared very serious as he had to be help off the court but he is waiting for a visit to the doctor. Hopefully, all goes well.
